when I started creating Vedova Nera, I knew I wanted it to stand beside Temptress as its darker counterpart.
Naturally, that led me to the Black Widow.
The Black Widow is one of the most recognizable spiders in the world, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. For decades, movies, folklore, and sensationalized stories have turned the Black Widow into something almost mythical. A creature feared for its venom, its reputation, and the stories people tell about it.
But as I started researching them, I found something far more interesting than the myths.
Black Widows are ancient survivors.
Their lineage stretches back more than 65 million years, with ancestors tracing back to the Cretaceous period. While they are younger than the Golden Orb Weaver, they have still survived changing climates, shifting continents, predators, and extinction events that wiped countless species from existence.
Today, Black Widow species can be found on nearly every continent except Antarctica, making them one of the most widespread and successful spider groups on Earth.
What fascinated me most, however, wasn’t their venom.
It was how they hunt.
Most people imagine predators as aggressive. They imagine something that chases, stalks, or pursues its target.
The Black Widow does none of those things. Instead, she creates a web.
Unlike the organized beauty of the Golden Orb Weaver, Black Widow webs are tangled, chaotic, irregular, and deceptively strong. They are built close to the ground in dark, sheltered spaces where prey never sees the trap until it’s already inside it.
The web does all the work & the spider waits.
And once something becomes entangled, the Black Widow responds with precision.
She wraps the prey in silk, immobilizes it, and delivers a venomous bite designed to overwhelm the nervous system.
That process fascinated me because it mirrors a truth many people overlook.
Not every form of power is loud. Not every form of retaliation is immediate. Some things are slow. Some things are strategic. Some things are patient enough to let the web do the work.
And that became the inspiration behind Vedova Nera.
The Black Widow isn’t feared because she’s reckless. She’s feared because she understands timing, she knows when to wait. She knows when to strike & because once something becomes entangled, the outcome has already begun.

Why the Golden Orb Weaver?
When I first started creating this oil, I knew I wanted to base it on a spider. Not just because spiders are beautiful, but because they are some of the most misunderstood creatures on the planet. Especially as a Loki devotee, I have found a new appreciation and love for spiders. The more I researched, the more I kept coming back to one species in particular: the Golden Orb Weaver.
The Golden Orb Weaver isn’t just another spider you happen to see walking down the road. It is considered one of the oldest surviving spider genera on Earth. Fossils dating back roughly 165 million years place its ancestors in the Jurassic period, meaning these spiders were around long before humans, before modern mammals, and before the world looked anything like it does today.
But what fascinated me wasn’t just how old they are. It was how they survived.
These spiders originated when the continents were still connected as Pangaea. As the world changed, continents separated, species disappeared, climates shifted, and mass extinctions occurred, the Golden Orb Weaver remained. Through millions upon millions of years, it adapted, evolved, and continued weaving its golden web.
Their silk is still studied by modern scientists because of how incredibly strong and elastic it is. In fact, researchers continue studying Golden Orb Weaver silk for potential uses in medical technology, including artificial tendons and surgical applications. I actually found that part incredibly fascinating while researching them.
What drew me to the Golden Orb Weaver wasn’t the scientific side of things. It was the spider itself.
Golden Orb Weavers create some of the most beautiful webs in the spider world. Their webs are massive, organized, intentional, and often shimmer with a golden hue in the sunlight. Unlike the messy, tangled webs most people picture when they think of spiders, these look like works of art.
A Golden Orb Weaver doesn’t run after what it wants. It doesn’t chase. It doesn’t force things to come its way. Instead, it creates something so captivating that things willingly move toward it.
